Obituary

MSGT. Richard Gene Travis Sr., USMC Retired, also known as the “Mint Man", 82, of Havelock, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at his home.

A visitation to honor Richard’s life will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Monday, September 25th, at Munden Funeral Home in Havelock. His graveside service will take place at 10 a.m., Thursday, September 28th at the Coastal Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville.

Richard was born on June 17, 1941, in Elmira, New York, to the late Theodore and Mildred Travis. He dedicated his life not only to serving his country but also enriching his community. He served his country with honor and distinction for over 28 years. Beyond his military service, he was active in the local Moose Lodge, and the American Legion in Morehead City. He was known for his kindness and generosity. Always willing to give a helping hand.

His passions went beyond his service to the community. Richard shared a forever love with his wife of over 62 years and treasured the time he spent with his beloved family. He loved spending time fishing, where he found peace of mind. He loved having family gatherings with his loved ones. Christmas was his favorite time of the year, and he transformed his home into a magical winter wonderland, bringing joy to all who visited. May his legacy live on in those he leaves behind.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Barbara Hill Travis of the home; daughters, Lisa Michelle Clark (Charles) of Havelock, Melissa Rene Travis (Gary Baskerville) of Havelock; sons, Richard G. Travis Jr. (Kelly) of Havelock, Robert Wayne Travis (Faith) of Bridgeton; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren with one on the way in December; and his cat Dash.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brother, Theodore R. Travis Jr.; and sisters, Susie Matthews, Ella Deery.

As an expression of sympathy, flowers are welcome.
