Obituary

GySgt. Floyd M. Quisenberry USMC (Ret) went to the Lord on Monday, September 12, 2022, at Carolina East Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at Munden Funeral Home & Cremations in Havelock, officiated by Rev. Jim Buchholz. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Floyd attended Eugene Fields Elementary School thru the 6th grade, and attended Celia Clinton Jr. High School for the 7th grade. He attended St. Catherine’s Elementary School for the 8th grade, and graduated in 1950 from Holy Family High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On October 4, 1949, he joined the Naval Reserve Unit in Tulsa and went to Great Lakes Naval Base for recruit training. With the outbreak of the Korean War, Floyd and his buddy joined the Marine Corps in November 1950 but was not inducted until January 1951.

After boot camp in San Diego, California, he trained at Camp Pendleton to be a Mortar Gunner and went to Korea on the 19th Replacement Draft. Upon arriving in Korea he was assigned to “H” Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division as a Mortar Gunner. After one week with “H” Company, he was transferred to H&S Company at the request of his recruiter, and was assigned as “H” Company clerk at Battalion Rear. After 10 months he was chosen to transfer to Hawaii to form a new experimental unit. Upon arrival in Hawaii, he was assigned to H & S Company, 1st Provisional Marine Air/Ground Task Force, at MCAS, Kaneohe Bay.

After being there for 11 months, he applied for and was accepted to train to be an Aerial Navigator at MCAS, Cherry Point, NC. He earned his Navigator Wings on November 12, 1954. He was assigned to VMR-352 in MCAS, Miami, Florida. Early in 1955, there was a cutback in air crews, and he was assigned as an Aviation Operations Specialist. Floyd held that position in various units until his retirement in December 1970. During the middle 60’s he purchased a runabout boat with an outboard motor and became interested in boating. He heard about the USPS and joined Cape Lookout Power Squadron of District 27 in North Carolina.

After his retirement, he was hired by NADEP and was enrolled in the Apprentice Program. Over the next 4 years, he learned and was made a Machinist. Due to some background with computers, he was assigned to the CAD/CAM program and became a machine programmer for NADEP. With some problems with management, Floyd resigned from NADEP and went to Craven Community College where he earned two Associate Degrees, one in Business Administration and one in accounting. During this time, he also earned his private pilot’s license.

With his interest in boating and teaching, he was elected the 12th Commander of the Cape Lookout Power Squadron and continued to move up in the organization and 4 years later was elected the 13th Commander of District 27 of USPS. During that time he attained the grade of Navigator and Life Member in the organization. Floyd was also instrumental in the formation of The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA) in Havelock and formed Chapter #92 of the National Organization. Floyd was the 2nd President of Chapter #92 and went forward at the National Level and was elected National Director, 3rd Vice President, and 2nd Vice President of the Organization. Floyd is also associated with the Knights of Columbus and is a 4th Degree Sir Knight of Columbus in the Annunciation Catholic Parish in Havelock, NC.

Floyd is survived by his daughter Victoria Quisenberry, of the home.
