As a Major of the French Air Force Reserve, I had the honor in june 2004 to welcome a group of US Veterans in Paris for them to receive the red ribbon of Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur, the highest french decoration, and later lead them to Normandy for a memorial ceremony at Omaha Beach war cemetery.
During the journey, I was impressed by "Doc" Borden simplicity despites the high value of his war duties, especially as a member of the medical staff of 6th Naval Beach Battalion on D-Day. He introduced me to his friend John Gallagher, whose face covered with bandages while awaiting evacuation from Omaha Beach is famous in french schoolboys' history books.
To his family, especially his youngest daughter and (as far as I remember) his niece who both escorted him to France 10 years ago, please accept all my sympathy and codolences. The booklet he then dedicated to me still stands proudly on my desk.
As said the speaker at the end of Normandy celebrations of 60th Anniversary, "I will never forget you".

The crew of the MEKA II were saddened by the passing of "Doc". He was my children's doctor and became a friend to me. Another milestone in my life gone.
Please accept our sincere condolences.

We will truly miss our dear friend! We walked with your father through many miles of his interesting life! He was a wonderful friend/ second dad to us! Thanks to him we have a love for nature. Not only birds but the frogs in the shower, the snakes and the mice at the river! It didn't matter which porch he sat on the hummingbirds found him and would fly all around him! He taught us much and over the 52 years we knew him he was a caring, loving, and kind hearted man! May you all feel Gods love and Peace at this time!

Dr. Borden was an excellent family practice doctor and obviously loved his work. He was the attending physician for both of my parents and provided outstanding care for them. We took comfort in his caring and compassionate bedside manner. He will be missed. I will continue to pray for the family. May the God of all comfort surround you with the outpouring of His love.
God Bless and Keep You,

Bo, Carmen, Mariah, Martha, Sarah, Paul,
I am very sorry for your -- our -- loss. In addition to his devotion and remarkable intuition and skill as a physician, your father was a generator, an energy source of compassion, idealism, and inspiration for generations of patients and young people. I was one of the many who were enriched by his friendship and inspired by his example. I will be with you in spirit, if not bodily present, on Thursday. If possible, my daughter Maggie and I will drive down from Virginia Beach to join you. Rest in Peace, Dick.

Sending my heartfelt sympathy and my prayers. Dr. Borden just full of life a great sense of humor, he was my doctor back in the late 70's and then became my son's doctor later on in the years, also. He really loved children and his patients and when you brought your child in for a checkup he was so amazed with them and how well they were doing and growing. He will be miss dearly and memories for years to come.

Dr. Borden was my family doctor from 1963 on. We were both living in Goldsboro and then our families moved to Carteret County. He had been a close friend of Sr. Sam Hatcher of Morehead City who was my doctor prior to moving to Goldsboro. It was the best referral I ever had when Dr. Hatcher gave me his name. He was famously late keeping appointment. I have waited in his waiting room up to three hours before being seen. There was one time I told my sick son to cry loud hoping that would speed up getting to see Dr. Borden.. He was a man of many interests and I tolerated his lateness because I knew he would cure whatever ailments I and my children had. I grew to love him as a friend. My heart is heavy with so many memories. He was a great doctor and I grieve along with his family and friends.
