Thomas Ivey Carraway, 92, of Beaufort, died quietly at home on Friday, August 11, 2017.

His funeral service will be held Monday, August 14, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, officiated by Rev. Taylor W. Mills. Burial will follow at Carteret Memorial Gardens in Beaufort.

Thomas was born and raised on the family farm in Merrimon. Tom left home at the age of 17 to join the US Navy where he served on the USS Chandeleur during World War II. He returned to Merrimon where he went to work at the Naval Air Rework Facility (NARF) at Cherry Point while continuing to work on the family farm. After retiring from Cherry Point with 35 years of service, Tom bought a small shrimp boat and began “farming” the water with his youngest son. He owned several trawlers over his 25 years as a fisherman.

He was a member of the Merrimon United Methodist Church for many years. In early 1990, he moved his membership to Ann Street United Methodist Church after moving to Beaufort. He was a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge for 45 years, the Carteret County Shrine Club and the Scottish Rite.

Tom loved working outdoors whether it be on the water, in the field or just around the yard. He shared his love for the outdoors with his children and grandchildren who have many fond memories of their adventures. His loveable nature and giving heart, along with his sense of humor remained for anyone that visited with him.

Tom enjoyed traveling with his wife across the United States, mostly to Florida, in their Avion travel trailer.

Tom is survived by his wife of 69 years, Selma Watson Carraway; his daughter, Frances C. Friday of Roxboro, NC; two sons, Jerry K. Carraway and wife, Barbara of Cary, NC, and Joseph M. Carraway and wife, Connie of Beaufort, NC; grandchildren, Laura Paul of Kinnelon, NJ, Gwen Corry of Waxahachie, TX, Peter Carraway and Mark Carraway of Beaufort, NC; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter F. and Addie M. Carraway; his siblings, Meriam C. Herrington, George E. Carraway, Marie C. Felton, Adilee C. Hardy, Tom’s twin sister, Ila C. Emer, and Verna C. Carraway; son-in-law, Bill Friday.

The family will receive friends at Munden Funeral Home from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2017.
